Meet Ruth. Ruth started with us in February 2018 and is already keen to increase the number of days she is with us.

Why did you first want to start training in the cafe?

I heard about the cafe from the day centre I was at (The Mulberry Centre, Chester) and thought it sounded lovely. My social worker organised a visit for me to meet the staff and learn more.

What did you want to learn about?

I wanted to learn how to cook and get more skills and confidence.

What are your thoughts about training here?

I love it here! I love the staff. It’s such a friendly cafe and great to train in.

What have you learnt so far?

I’ve learnt how to use the till and serve customers, make food and drinks and keep the cafe tidy. It has helped me to become a lot more confident, especially in front of customers.

You’re going to be starting your NVQ level 1 in catering and hospitality soon. How do you feel about that?

I’m excited! It will be really useful.

Finally, if someone was thinking about training in the cafe, what would you say to them?

Go for it! The staff are lovely and it’s so much fun.

Meet Christine. Christine has been training with us since February 2018.

How did you first hear about the cafe?

I worked at another cafe run by Vivo, Stanlaw Abbey. Imelda (the service supervisor) told my sister about it.

So what made you come across to us?

I liked that it is in the middle of Chester and busy. I like to help.

What days/times do you do?

I do Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. I do 8-4 Monday and Friday and 10-4 Saturdays. I would like to start doing more days soon.

How have you found it so far?

I’ve found it brilliant and all the staff are brilliant.

What’s your favourite thing about training here?

My favourite thing is talking the customers and helping to tidy the cafe.

How do you feel about starting your NVQ soon?

I feel wonderful about it!

Would you recommend the training programme to anyone else?

Yes, I certainly would.
